Calling all Allegany College of Maryland students from Cumberland, to Somerset, to Bedford!
Are you passionate about saving the world? Do you have a solution to a problem that the world is challenged with today? Here is your chance to share your ideas and help make the world a better place!
How can you be a change agent? It’s simple! REGISTER HERE!
Enter the “Save the World Fair,” slated to be held on Wednesday, April 27th at ACM’s Cumberland Campus – in the College Center and Auditorium – from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Those who enter will create and display a presentation / poster board at the Save the World Fair that tells us how you plan on making a better world possible. The world needs your best ideas and active participation!
The registration deadline is Friday, April 22, 2016.
For your presentation / poster board – include the following:
1) Describe the problem.
2) Explain the problem….list facts and/or statistics.
3) Tell us what your solution is and how it might be accomplished.
Each of the presentations will be voted on by students and staff on April 27th.
“Save the World” Voting Criteria:
1) The problem being presented is clearly defined.
2) Background information about the problem is evident, engaging, and credible.
3) A creative solution was presented that can be applied in the real world.
PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED FOR THOSE PRESENTATIONS THAT EARN THE MOST VOTES FROM PEOPLE WHO ATTEND THE “SAVE THE WORLD FAIR.”
The top two winners will attend the “Civic Learning & Democratic Engagement Meeting” Tuesday, May 31, 2016 to Saturday, June 4, 2016 * Indianapolis Marriott Downtown • Indianapolis, Indiana – all expenses paid. The third place winner will receive a $100 gift card to Walmart.
The fourth place winner will receive a $50 gift card to the ACM Book Center.

Volunteer Project Name: Tinkering Camp
Project Description: At Tinker Camp, youth ages 8-14 will learn, discover, and create using electronics and other materials.
What will the Student Volunteer to Do? Student volunteers will work directly with youth to build circuits and create projects.

What will the Student Learn? The student will learn circuitry basics, gain experience working with youth in a non-classroom setting, and learn STEM education best practices.
Is an application or contact information required? Volunteers must meet with Jessica Mellon in advance of camp to discuss plans and preparations.
Students who volunteer should complete the ACM forms – listed on Page 7 – in the SL/CE Student Handbook found at this link. Please return your forms to the Service Learning and Civic Engagement office – located in the Humanities Building in room 11a.
The Cumberland Day of Caring and Sharing needs a few good volunteers – almost 200. There are still 19
projects that need volunteers. Join the United Way for the 15th event — Friday, May 18 from 8 am until 12 noon (lunch begins at noon). Projects are all over Cumberland. If you, your group or your business
would like to sign up to volunteer contact the volunteer center at (301) 784-5331 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Doughnuts and coffee are at 8 am on the downtown Cumberland Mall – then report to your work sites at 8:30 – work until 12 noon – then to Hot Stove Bingo Hall for lunch.
Western Maryland Hospital System will be holding a Decontamination Exercise on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 from 10 am – Noon, for which they would need 10 – 15 volunteers that would be willing to wear their bathing suit and let run through our Decon Shower several times. The water will be warm so you will not going to be showered in cold water.
WMHS will also be offering free meal cards to their dining facility to show their appreciation for any volunteers that can help out.
